Haiku

On Friday I had the pleasure of joining Mr. Daley and some of his students for their morning meeting, and a super fun game of Scattergories. I had a blast!  After the game, one of my fourth grade friends asked for some tips on writing haiku, so I thought I'd share a few haiku here.  The tips are on the page called "The Writing Corner" - just scooch your eyes over to the right and you'll see it listed.  When you go to that page- scroll all the way to the last post (today, May 4) and you'll see the start of this week's writing workshop ideas. Thanks, again to Mr. Daley and his class for including me, and inspiring me!
Here are some haiku for you!

Stickball players about
as moonlight floods their field
from curb to curb

The young artist takes
pains to paint a masterpiece:
a smiling pumpkin

The moaning snowplow
shatters the frigid stillness
of a crystal night
Fluttering of wings
birds fight at the bird feeder
swinging in the oak

all the whole night long
in eyes of carousel ponies
you can see light shine

                                                                                      November evening--
the wind from a passing truck
ripples roadside puddles.

from the tar papered
tenement roof, the pigeons
hot-foot into flight

  1. I have not heard of haiku. What does it mean to write haiku? What are some rules you use when writing haiku? - Cecelia
